Is it (a/c clutch) making a constant clicking sound, audible most frequently at idle and going away when you start off? I am not talking about the normal clutch engagement sound when the compressor cycles on and off.
If you are getting this annoying sound, you may need to replace the compressor. My a/c clutch did this for about 10,000 miles until it finally stopped engaging.

yes the clutch on the front of the a/c pump - just free wheels. some electrical control to engage it - anyone know about the electrics.

If the expansion valve is messed up, the compressor will come on and then go off.

If it NEVER engages, could be a relay or a bad compressor.
