Maybe call the dealer to find out if there is a maint. bulletin about this. Airbag safety is pretty important and controlled by the Feds. Don't wait because your airbag sensor maybe malfunctioning.
As far as the airbag light...that's one thing you can't do yourself. You simply must take it to the dealer, there's pretty much no way around that.

The light in our cars is in our instrument clusters.

In answer to your question have you touched anything under your chair as that is where the wire for the airbag is as my friend found out after he had his car valeted and they knocked the wire.
Even so sorry but you still have to go to a dealer or another garage to have the light put out. ghead
I have the same problem and the dealer did not fixed it. But I have found out through other forums that there can be a number of problem most related to wire problems.
1. check your ignition switch it wears out after 100000 kilometers. You can easy check the switch by giving a knock under the switch you will see that the airbag light turns on and off :-).
Also a symptom for wear on the ignition switch is that you can turn the key around in the ignition switch without anything happing. But a lot of electrical is triggered by the ignition key.
2. under you front seats there is a connector which connects the airbag sensors under the front seats to the control unit. The connector also wear out and the easy way is to short circuit the wires. The connectors can cause problems because the move when you adjust your seat.
Yes, good point kooij014, those sensors can definitely set it off. Since this thread was created (a year ago), my airbag light came on and it turned out to be the seat sensor. I had it turned off when they diagnosed it and it hasn't come on again, but if it does I guess I'm going to see what I can do about fixing it. I'm not sure how...if anyone has any pointers please let me know.

I just got my 97' 528 serviced for the same thing. But at my dealer, they replaced the wire under the seat. It cost me about 100 euro (about $130). But it is one of those things I had to get done.

If you have a 97 5 series can you tell me where the E Box is? I'm looking for the wiper relays.....
Wish I could help. I have not had to look for the E box. And what is wrong with your wiper relays? Is the timing off?
ANd may I add, I just got my 97' about 2 weeks ago, so I haven't had a lot of time to get in and play around with the ride between work and a very pregnant wife.
#$%$! My damn airbag light came on AGAIN! It's the wire under my seat. Can someone tell me if they've been able to fix it themselves? What I should look for? My car is sucking up my money, I need to do everything I can myself!

Exact same thing happened to me twice! Seat belt tensioners the both times (bad wiring). Unfortunately there isnt much you can do but take it to the mechanic from what I was told. ghead
