Could I get some suggestions on aftermarket radio units for the e39? I would like to install a unit that has DVD,Nav,Bluetooth, Iphone, Ipod, etc etc...
Inquired already about the Alpine IVA-W505R and Alpine INA-W900..
Looks great.. Was just wondering if anybody could give more suggestions but not really breaking the Bank.
I would just like to change the unit first. Thats all. Speakers could come after.
You can install a 2DIN like the W505 into the E39 but it is going to require custom modification behind the dash as the air ducts are in the way. Most people who install a 2DIN unit in the E39 have to cut into the air ducting and lay in a metal cover to fill the hole. No one makes 2DIN dash kits for the E39 either and you will likely need to pay extra to have one made.
The fact of the matter is you're going to pay over $1000 anyways and if you really want DVD, Nav, Bluetooth, and iPod/iPhone connectivity don't expect to pay any less than that. Also, do not go on eBay looking for a W505 either because if you buy it from a non authorized dealer you will not have any kind of warranty. Most of those items are all drop ship or repaired poorly.
My advice is to save your money, buy the W505, and have it professionally installed. Avoid Best Buy or any other mass electronics retailer like the plague for installs.
I finally got my new aftermarket stereo installed. I did not go with the double din as what you said was right. Air Ducts are blocking so what i got was single din (Flip Top) ---- PIONEER AVH - 5200 BT. It is awesome.
Had some modifications built in the dash but works perfect... Got a 10inch sub located inside the cover (OVER The battery) in my trunk. This would entail me to have more space.
I am so happy with this unit.. It has all the functions you want..
I have a Double-Din Soundstream VIR-7355 Source Unit VIR-7355 that is on the way to install....
AND FOR THE RECORD BECAUSE I WAS SEARCHING AND NO ONE HAD AN ANSWER EXCEPT CUSTOM.... METRA HAS A DOUBLE DIN KIT AVAILABLE FOR THE E39... ITS BEEN IN PRODUCTION AND I HAVE ONE SITTING HERE... I CAN POST THE PART NUMBER AND PICTURES WHEN I GET HOME IF ANYONE NEEDS THEM...
ok... dont have the installed pic yet as the parts are all laying here in my bedroom right now... LMAO... but here's a pic of the head unit installation kit... and part numbers needed are 95-9307B , 40-EU30 , 70-9003 , and if you want to keep your steering wheel controls, ASWC... but your radio need to accept the wireless remotes for this to work... its weird.. LOL
It is no hard to put a double-din radio.. all you need is a dremel and some aluminum foil tape. you can get both at home depot... plus the radio kits...
The cuts are for the radio wires if all the wires are on right side just cut the right side...

I've heard for a new kit for installing double-din units in E39, but as i've heard no mods are required to the air box. Has anybody heard something like that? I am interested in do it to my car but not if the air box must be modified
