Aftermarket head unit in 98 528

i have a single din alpine cd player that i would like to put in the car. do i have to take out the whole radio unit and cassette under the wood panel? i saw somebody just take out the cassette part and put in a dvd head unit with the screen. i already have my ipod hooked up to the head unit so where would be a good place to run the ipod to? glove box?

Also my sunroof does not work. it needs a new "cassette" assembly. supposedly the rails are bent. is there a cheaper way to fix this than the dealers 1800 dollar solution of a new cassette? Thanks!
