Hey guys, I am in the market for an M5 but have no experience with these cars. I have located a 2002 M5 with low miles. Since I know nothing, what are things I should know about the car such as major recalls or common problems and issues...electrical, engine, power windows, etc. What is the annual cost of owning an M5?
What would be the best questions to ask the current owner and what things can I check. Any help is greatly appreciated as this has been my dream car for years and I now might have the chance to own one. Thanks.
Get a service history on the vehicle and make are you do a VIN check.
First, the BMW M engines normally use different oil then the regular engines. BMW requires the use of Castrol 10w-60 oil. Now I personally have never seen this for sale in my local stores but it may be more available where you live. However numerous online retailers carry oil change packages.
The V8's aren't as reliable as the inline 6 engines that BMW makes, but they are still decent. The E39 M5 makes 400 HP stock. Their is a common issue with a gasket at the back of the engine needing replacing over time but it's a relatively easy fix and their are numerous DIY writeups on it.
These cars are much cheaper when you do the work on the car yourself. Average labour cost is $80-100 though so keep that in mind. Check out ECS Tuning, Bimmerworld, and Turner Motorsports for information on maintenance packages.
