I have started a petition with the attempts to have BMW address the ABS module breakdown. Lets get BMW to work with us to resolve this issue instead of just forking out $1200 dollars + for a part that should not break down. The link to the petition is

Lets stop dealer and BMW abuse... They are raking us over the coals on this one.
This is a known issue, which I believe was resolved in the second production of the 99 5 series... they moved the module from inside the engine to behind the glove box.
In order to fix this issue all dealers want about $1200 and it takes about 5 minutes to preform the task.
The units affected were produced in '98 & '99, installed in model years '99 and '00. Unfortunately, you probably won't get far with this petition. According to ModuleMasters, no car manufacturer to date has recalled ABS issues because their failure does not result in loss of stopping power. As such, it is not considered a safety issue worthy of a recall. And as far as I know, the modules weren't relocated because mine is in the same place in the engine bay.
Thanks for the information... Did the module master repair work for you? It did not for me... tried 2x's.
Also thanks for the clarification on the move of the module... I assume in 2001 they did move them? I was told by my mechanic that the module was moved to resolve this "known" issue.
That is the point, they know they have a design issue, but yet they charge $1200 the module, you cannot reprogram older one and the only option is via the dealer... They should at least charge a "fair" price instead of stealing my money.
