About to purchase 2001-2003 5series

Hi,

I am in a market for a second vehicle and 2001-2003 bmw 5 series caught my eyes. I am planning on getting something around 6k with preferably with less than 120k miles.

Well here are my concerns,

How are the engines and transmissions?

Are there any prevalent issues that i should be aware of?

Would you guys recommend getting an used bmw5 series as far as being a reliable car?

any inputs about these years will be much appreciated and thanks in advance

The E39 is an excellent and very stylish car. The engines and transmissions are very well built and will last a long time as long as all preventative Maintenance is done properly. Ignore the "lifetime fluid" claims that BMW makes about its transmission fluid. It's simply not true and both manufacturers of BMWs transmissions have never stood by this.

The I6 engines are better then the V8s but both are equally good. The E39 had a self leveling suspension which if it fails can be expensive but some models contain the traditional spring/strut suspension.
