'99 540i Sport starts but only idles

Good Doctors, my baby is sick: after replacing the battery because AAA said that the battery was bad and not providing enough cranking amps, she's still sick. Prior to replacing the battery, the car would start but cut right off. With the old battery, several retries left the battery dead. The replaced battery now allows for me to get it stated and turned over, but now it just idles. Pushing down on the accelerator does nothing. Its as if the engine doesn't hear the request. But once I put it in 1st gear and coax it by barely letting up off of the clutch, she moves ever so slowly. When I let up off the clutch completely, she cuts off. Restarted I can get it barely moving, but pusing on the accelerator and putting it into gear gets me nothing. However, if I get it rolling, clutch engaged, turn the car off and then re-start it, put it in gear, she kicks in and is ready to go. Needless to say, this can't be good for the car or my sanity.
