97 528 intermittent a/c

I have a 97 528. The car runs amazing. The only problem is that the a/c is intermittent. There are times when it is ice cold. It seems that when I need it the mos it only gets Luke-warm. Also there are times when the fan speed will not increase regardless of the fan setting. Am I looking at 2diferent problems? I have had the system completely evacuated and recharged with fresh freon by my general mechanic. There is no reason why it shouldn't be working. The clutch cycles fine. It is holding pressure...

I need some help, summer temps are already killing me.

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

The fan speed is controled by the blower motor. If the fan is not increasing in speed when you select a higher setting then the motor, or the blower motor resistor may be failing. As for the lukewarm/cold issue, make sure your coolant level is topped up, and that all air is bleed from the system. An airbubble in the system can cause that. The coolant also feeds into the heater core.

As Lord Vader said you may have a failing Final stage Resistor. Here is a link to a DIY: Replacing the final stage unit/blower motor resistor (E39) - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

Also, for the lukewarm A.C. Does it happen when sitting at a stop but then cools down more while the vehicle is moving? Check to make sure that your auxillary cooling fan is running when the A.C is on. If the fan is not working then this can give you these symptoms. Best of Luck,
