Just got a 97 528i on saturday. Have noticed that the temp never runs above the blue on the left and side of the gage. is this normal? also the check engine light came on tonight it is fairly cold outside and was wondering if this could cause it. i have 80,000 mile on it and it is running great besides these two problems. any help would be great
The temp should run at halfway at normal operating temperature. Your thermostat is likely stuck open. This can set a fault for "temperature not at specified value in specified time"..this may or may not be the reason, but it's possible.
thanks, that is what i thought might be wrong with the temp, but just not sure... i do not know much about working on bmw's ... still worried about the check engine light though... where is the thermostat located?
thermostat is in the thermostat housing, my car also was running cold and it ended up being the thermostat (even though i got an e30) so that would be my guess
