'96 528i - A puff of smoke and now stalls!

Well, not really my idea of a first post, but well ....these things happen.

Been driving our 528i around town today, parked it outside a cafe, had a coffee and then went to start it up again....

Engine cranked over, gave a puff off smoke out from the front (under the bonnet) and then stalled. Whenever you try to turn the engine over now, simply stalls and dies.

If you put yr foot on the gas, it will rev up but as soon as you let go it stalls. Engine seems to be running a bit rich as well and sounds to be slightly missfiring.

The car has done about 190,000kms, but has been regularly serviced by our local BMW dealer.

Any ideas? Head gasket gone? Sensor died? Major or minor?

most likely clogged throttle body,or a vaccuum leak,or ca, positioning sensor check for vac leaks first its the easiest and cheapest fix good luck

Unplug your MAF first. That wouldn't explain the puff of smoke but the way the car acts is like a MAF. By unplugging your MAF you are forcing your car to defaults.

Second, check for all vacuum leaks. Use starting fluid or carb cleaner and start spraying about hoses. If you hear your RPMs increase you just found your vacuum leak.
