I have to agree. I have not long owned my 540 and I am in love with it. It has done 63500km and is 1994 but would pass for nearly new. I have let it breath a bit better by way of better air filter and replaced the rear muffler and I am getting 32+mpg on a trip at a steady 100kmh and average 26mpg overall. Once you get to go somewhere where you can 'play' a little, you will fall for it. The sound of 32 valves doing their thing at 4000rpm stirs the senses. Enjoy and pretend you know nothing of nicosil or alusil or some name like that.
Yes, Schnitzer get the cars, I understand, new ex factory, wave their wand over it then give the car back for sale. With my E30 325, it has a branded full leather interior with extending seats even, the steering wheel is leather and branded Schnitzer, the management system has been enhanced, the induction system is up to series 5 spec, the body skirts and even the boot spoiler is branded Schnitzer, plus the wheels and suspension. It's just different to the norm which is why I bought it. Hope this helps further. Cheers.
To answer your original question: No, it is not reliable. Depends on how you define "reliable", but by my definition (doesn't leave you stranded on the side of the road AND doesn't cost an arm and a leg to keep it on the road), almost no 540 is "reliable", and a 1995 540 most definitely is not reliable.

My 94 540 did many 150 mile trips day in day out for the 9 months or so I owned it. Put about 12k miles on it in that time, started with 130k miles and never had a problem during that whole time.
Of course when you get older and older cars, where they came from in the USA(rust up north or dry rotting down south), maintenance and lots of other factors are important. My car wasnt very well taken care of before I owned it but it still worked perfectly during the time I had it. Its suspension/engine/etc are more complicated then 3 series, etc so its repairs are a bit more expensive if something does break.

i do not agree.. almost every E34 i have driven or seen has been an extremely reliable car, a few quirks to be expected when buying a 10-20yr old car..
