my 95 525i is giving brake lining message but the brakes are working fine. a couple of days ago i got stuck in a snow storm and had to drive through sleet n snow with heavy brake use. its brakes smell whenever applied even slightly since then, but they still work well. any suggestions?

the brake lining light does not indicate that your brakes are not working properly. It indicates that the pads have reached the factory specified minimum thickness and it is recommended to replace them. If the pads are new and you still are getting the message, then you may have disconnected or damaged the sensor somehow while driving through the snow.

Before you start checking the sensors you might thaw out the car in a warm garage and see if the problem goes away.
