I have a 94 540i w/145K miles and I'm experiencing a very strange problem with the automatic transmission.
Basically the normal driving mode ('E') doesn't engage properly right away. If I put it in Drive it will crawl for a while and suddenly it will engage and drive pretty normal. I've got the fluid replaced but now it's worst because it will do it even at traffic lights or stops.
This is the interesting part: if I use the winter mode (*) it runs perfectly. The mechanic told me it could be a solenoid since he found the old fluid clean with no metal traces which indicate it's not a mechanical problem.
Hey Mat,
Does'nt sound real flash ahy.
I hope it is the solenoid, because that is an easy fix and not expensive. If the fluids are ok in the trans, then it as to be something more serious inside.Probably a stuck valve or something worn.
Find a shop with good auto repair history.
good luck.
Matt,
Check the trans wire harness, I have had seals leak causing all kinds of funky shifting problems. Also the mode selector switch could be the problem, maybe spilled some coffee on it? I would swap one in being that it's inexpensive.
