94 530i ZF5HP18 transmission fluid - BMW Forum

Okay I am new to this site the BMW fourm I was last with can never answer any question I have so here I am. I hope you all can help. I have a 94 530 with the ZF5HP18 automatic transmission. I have it torn down on the bench but can not put it back together to build it.

I can not find out what type of fluid goes in this transmission. I have been told several different things by different sources. I have been told DEXTRON III (why would BMW put a GM fluid in a German transmission?) also been told Esso Type LT71141. I also have been told to use a universal import fluid.

I need to find out what fluid so I can start my rebuild. I also would like to use a synthetic fluid if possible.

Have you tried contacting ZF for specs on this model?

No I have not. I have found the ZF web site but have yet to be able to pull up the page for fluid types.
