94 530i 5spd auto trans. shifting issues

hi there,

i have searched many threads here and found lots of good info. but not exactly what i need help with. my 530i when in M shift mode, or in S shift mode. will not shift past 3rd gear. if i shift from s4 to drive it will move to 4th and 5th. it will "kickdown" to 4th from 5th in drive. but locked out in 4 or using the M mode it wont go past 3rd. it`s got 144k miles on the tranny. engine only 73k(new alumsl). to my knowladge never been serviced. the dealer sugested just using drive and waiting to see what happens. as the only 2 things they do start at about $2500. any input would be greatly appreciated. also, may not be connected but. the car has a vibration starting at about 50mph untill the engine is at normal temp. then it`s smooth as glass.

The transmission needs service. It's probably well overdue for a fluid change.

thanks. that was my plan untill i read some of the threads here about their trans. getting worse after. i guess it can`t hurt to try.
