'93 E34 heating issues

New to this forum....hello everyone....

My car has been off the road for a little while and I just got everything straightened out (head replacement). Also has 240k. It was 32F this morning and I noticed my heater was not pumping out the hot air like it normally used to. It was more warm than anything else. I thought maybe I still have an air bubble since I just filled the radiator, but the radiator is bled and full. I noticed a few other issues as well. Here are the symptoms:

(1) The top dashboard vent only blows cold air
(2) Only a little air volume (hot) comes out the defrost, when only the defrost is selected....but I can hear the blower motor running full blast
(3) Only a little air volume (hot) comes out the floor heat, when only the floor heat is selected...but I can hear the blower on full blast
(4) When all three are selected (defrost, floor and vent), only a little air comes out the vent and it is cool
(5) When only the vent is selected, it has high air volume and it is mostly hot, but not as hot as it should be....

***blower seems to be working fine

other issues maybe related
(1) when a/c is selected, sometimes the a/c turns off (lights go out)....I have been able to get it to come back on by wiggling the fan speed dial and moving the dial in and out a little so I think it may be the contacts in the dial
(2) on occasion, the blower may stop working at fan position 2 or 3 (can't remember which)....turning it off and on again usually corrects the issue.
I think these two may be that I just need to replace the controls, but just thought I would add that in.

I did do some searching first, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am a little confused between the blade, control module, and some of the other servos that control different things. Hopefully some of my description will help narrow it down.

update.....

After reviewing some diagrams, I am convinced at least one issue is related to the dial between the middle dash vents. It is supposed to let in fresh air on the blue dot and switch over to hot with the red dot. Nothing changes when I move it up and down and it feels loose. Going to check to see if the cable broke.

Also, if I switch on the recirculate button, I can hear a flap move and then the air in the middle vent gets really hot (which was previously warm). More air comes out the defrost vent when it is selected by itself and more air comes out the floor when it is selected by itself.

I think for now I am going to work on the dial between the vents......

Thanks for the post. I meant to post back with pics on what I found. I tore the middle dash vent apart and traced a wire to a servo located on the passenger side footwell. Took the trim off and found the servo had broken off. It is the servo for fresh air so the flap was stuck in the middle which is why I was getting lukewarm and cold air. When I attempted to put the servo back the servo was in the wrong position, so I had to remove the servo from the gearbox and line it back up to the flap. Only problem was that the servo would not stay in place due to some broken plastic. I found a place to put a long screw through the gearbox and mounted it firmly. Everything is working as it should now an the hot air is now toasty. I will post some pics later tonight.

Rupesy thanks for your post, it helps a bit. I just bought a 94 e34 with 97,000 miles, and am having a similar problem however I don't get any hot air from all vents circled in red. I do get heat from the floor and defrost but not very fast moving heat at all. I'm new to this car and this forum and really wondering:
1. how does the stock heat work in these cars...am i supposed to get heat from all vents?
2. if I fix the servo, assuming this will get me only heat out of the 2 center sidebyside vents, what can I do about the top center vent and the side vents blowing only cold?
3. did you ever figure out how to get a higher flow of heat from the defrost and floor, i'm having the same issues there too and its about get very cold.

Glad that post was of some use! Sorry I did not get back to your original questions. I had the same motivation to fix mine back when I originally posted....it was getting cold!

I never really got much farther than the fix I did, however, I believe I still had some small issues. I didn't mess with it any further and put investigation of the rest off for another rainy day project. I figured that at some point I would need to look at each servo individually.

Hi Rupesy I note your post is about 4 years old but I am hoping you or some other member can assist me with the same fault as in your case.
1993 520i E34 M50, When attempting to change cabin filter (RHD,split filter, because of steering column PITA) noticed a stepper motor and gearbox hanging on wire harness as you described. do you have to take the center console and dashboard covers of to gain access ? if so is there a link to this procedure?
