I have a 92 525i with 81km. Idles good upon startup. Runs great in city or highway. When I come to a red light after the car is heated, and wait, the car stalls. I get a Trans Program reading on the computer. Car starts up again no problem. Also, if I place car in N, I can feather the pedal and keep car from stalling. I have had a tune up with all filters replaced. Any ideas ?
Still doing the same thing....Someone mentioned the air mass flow sensor, but I think if it were that, that the problem would even when it's not hot. Please keep me informed....PS : I too my car in to Karmac Autohause in Edmonton, and I won't be going back there anytime soon....If you have the recommend of a shope I would be most receptive. I live out in Jasper, so I have to plan for these events.....Ty and I hope it gets figured out.
We found the issue. The car is earthing out somewhere in the wiring loom. Every once in a while it will kill the AFM and fuel pump so the car just dies, if you rev it, its ok though. Very weird problem but its down at the auto electricians now. We went through the fuel system, intake system, ignition and its been at the auto lecys a few times, very hard to work out.
My car now sputters and actually has backfired a few times now. It used to just stall out and I'd be okay after. Works good still when it's cold and when I'm on the highway. Town travel the car won't stop stalling. When you give it gas it will stall like it's getting flooded. Really weird. I have it at a shop and they first told me it was the Control Temp Sensor. But it wasn't. They are still currently working on it when they can. I need some input from someone !!! thanks.

sputter/backfire is ALWAYS a symptom of wrong air-to-fuel ratio mixture.
Let's start by describing to me tune-up/repairs done to date, filters you changed. o2 sensors changed? yes? no? at what mileage?
If your car is already in the shop...
1)what is the compression reading? all cylinders... 1-6
2)what is the fuel pressure reading?(they should be able to tell you that much... in "psi")
then.. i would like you to tell me the make of your plugs, the model #, and the condition of the plug when piulled out of the car.
I had a tune up done one year ago. I asked them to address the problem at the time, and they said their mechanic could not find anything that the car was running good. At that time the car would stall out after coming off of the highway. It would restart and I would have no problem accelerating after that. That was the norm until a few weeks ago, when the car started to sputter and even backfire. When i depressed the gas pedal, it would stall, like it was flooding. To get the car going, I would place in neutral, ( the engine always revs good in neutral), and then I would put it into drive when the revs were up and it would bang into gear and the engine at least would have enough rpm's to keep going and not stall.
I have the car in the shop as I have said, and this is Sunday. I will call the shop Monday morning and ask the mechanic for the information that you have posted. Thank you
