89 535i suddenly not starting and yet has a motor running while shut down. - BMW Forum

We came back from running errands in our 89 535i automatic put up the groceries and changed to go to work and the car would not start. Did not click, did not turn, however all the lights are fine and the battery is fine. There is also a whirring motor sound from the engine area that has continued to run even after the key is disengaged...the only way to stop it was to disconnect the battery. Any suggestions?

hmmm..... sounds like the starter is stuck spinning but not engaged right?

could be...how would one "unstick" it? and would it still run like that after the car is turned off?

lol no it shouldn't it should only spin when cranking the engine... Dont laugh but hitting it with a hammer normally works...
