88 535is electronic shift control circut?

Hello All!! I own a 1988 535is. Yesterday the light with the little gear with an ! in it went on. I read that this indicates that I am stuck in 3rd gear forever until I replace the"electronic shift control circut".
My questions are:
Is this circut known by any other names?
I had trouble finding one on the web, anyone have any suggestions?
Anyone know how much it costs to replace?
Anyone know where it is in the car?

Any help would be awsome!!!!

Actually, the funny thing is, the circut started working again today!
We had some bad rain all weekend and it must have gotten in there.
I'll have to delve futher into the matter to see if it is a ground issue or a water gettin somewhere it's not supposed to be.

Hehe, my e28 has not that problem.. you know, manual transmission and all.
