alright, i decided that im gonna keep the drivetrain running and slowly tweak that first, so my questions will start from there.
Most importantly: how do get the onboard computer to go to standard units again? metrics is confusing me
Engine:
When I start the car, espescially on cold mornings, the engine make an odd tapping/ ticking noise, which fades away after about 15 min. My dad and i checked the valves, and they were tighter than reccommended, so we figured perhaps there was an issue with it running properly due to excess of 220000 miles, and had to be re calibrated to compensate. we made them all uniformly open at least, and the noise has slightly subsided. any ideas?
Even though my temp gauge rarely moves, my feet sometimes get really hot, and passengers notice this too, like hot engine compartment air is blowing rigt at our feet. im fine on oil and coolant, and the hood never get hotter than i would expect for other cars. and im sure the heaters not on too, thanks for asking.
transmission:
On cold mornings, I sometimes cant shift into second, the stick just wont go all the way into the slot (yes, thats innuendo, no its not intended).
Sometimes while driving, ill shift into second and release the clutch to hear a loud grinding noise, i know this is usually about shifting improperly, but even when i made sure to go through the steps correctly, it happens. any ideas?
sometimes after shifting, espescially in 2nd and 3rd gears, i wont be able to accelerate as quickly as other times. I can put the pedal to the floor, and not really gain much speed, but then something kicks up and i start accelerating normally again. wtf?
any sugestions, references, ideas, or similar experiences are greatly appreciated, and has anyone ever taken off all the plastics and refinished them or anything? or how bout re-upholstered their entire car (save maybe the ceiling). im thinking about doing those later on
i have a 92 318is and i have the same ticking noise when i start it. now its always present when i drive, following the likes of the speed of the car. if i drive off too soon without warming up on semi-cold days, the car hesitates when accelerating.
The tapping may be due to worn valve train components.
You are getting hot air because your heater valve is bad. Also if you are still getting air flow when your vents are supposed to be closed, you have a problem with your fresh air flap in the heater box.
When the tranny is cold, the oil is thick, this makes shifting difficult and is a common symptom. You may want to try using Redline MTL tranny fluid.
