okay even though i am pretty familiar with the newer BMW's i just wante dto know of any common problem area that might be specific to the older 5 series. i mean i know fo the common problems with most of the other old cars: oil pan gaskets, timing belts, etc. but i was just making sure there wasn't anything that is specific to the E12's. my dad is wanting to buy a 535 for like $500 and we already know that it will need tires, radiator, and thrust arms and bushings. which all that is no prob. i have acess to a shop so it won't be anything a saturday can't take care of.

A 1984 is an E28 not E12. Anyway, I have a 1987 535i and it runs like a champ, even with over 250k miles on it. I would definately recomend upgrading the stock wheels because of the metric sizing. Other than that, I have onyl had pretty standard problems with it. Hope that helps.

Edit: I just thought of one thing. Since the car is so heavy and the disc brakes are small you may have to replace the brakes slightly more often then you would on a more modern car.
