Hi,
i got pretty scared this morning when starting up the car i saw white smoke coming from exhaust. Car is 1997 540i with 108k miles on it.
The day before i was changiing sparkplugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil and oil filter. When removed engine covers, there was oil in the park plugs area. So i believe they were head gaskets what were leaking. Cleaned up that oil with paper towels as much as possible, took out old plugs and put on new ones. While doing this, some of the oil dripped to combustion chambers. Engine started up and every cyinder was working, as i could hear , only thing was puff of blue smoke for couple of seconds. So today when started the engine i checked the exhaust for burning oil and there was absolutely nothing. But after 30seconds-1 minute idling there was white smoke from the exhaust and it disappeared after some time. It was around 40 degrees outside that time.
Car runs great and there is no sign of misfire or anything. No Check Engine light. No overheating.
I will gonna have a garage in couple of months and was going to replace head gaskets but now im bit concerned. (Do i need only head gaskets or additional head gasket set?)
Tomorrow will see if that white smoke is going to show up again.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
As you know white smoke in cold weather is normal (it is not smoke as in burning coolant proper) blue smoke is another story-burning oil- in you case as you described it above; I agree with power///M not to worry. The scary part, however, is the constant (white smoke proper) did you use the proper torque/without over torque when you installed the spark plugs?
Agree with everything written thus far. Would not replace the head gasket unless you know it is bad. If it ain't broke....
Had a similar situation when I replaced my plugs. I think it was a combination of the breather valve not working properly (it was gummed up and the 2 hoses were not in the best shape) and the valve cover gasket leaking (in various places). All which I replaced and now have no oil in the plug wells.
