Hi, I noticed a problem over the past couple months. The car will spin up when starting cold. Warm start fine. This morning I noticed oil underneath, so I started it and watched the engine. It spun up fast and oil started erupting from the screw cap seam on the oil filter. I removed the oil filter assembly and cleaned it up. Know what might be causing this problem?
yeah, i changed the oil myself and remember the o-ring in the cap, there was also another little flat metal washer. I have always changed it before without incident. Got any other ideas? I appreciate your insight.
It seems like the oil filter "can" fills(ed) up with oil and becomes pressurized to the point where it starts leaking. When I removed the cap and filter, the oil in the can drained back into the engine. Here is something else I noticed. There are two main, metal braided tubes, you cannot blow in or out, they seem blocked or sealed. Now there is a small, non-braided third tube on the bottom that had no restriction and it is likely the oil drained back into the engine through this tube.
It is possible that your oil lines to and from the filter are blocked. Frankly, I doubt your engine would run 100 miles if that were the case, but not a bad thing to check.
When was the last time you had your valve covers off? How did it look when you did? Not a bad thing to investigate. If there is overmuch sludge, time to sell your car.
if so..... run some seafoam in the crank case it help alot with sludge...

I was planning on removing these valve covers anyway for powder coating since the factory paint is suffering its characteristic bubble and peel routine typical on the M62. I just didn't plan on doing it now! oh well...I will first pull the oil pan and inspect that, replace the oil pressure switch, change the oil and filter and see what happens.

Here are some pics to the valve cover powder job, a quickie but a lot better than what it was deteriorating into. Looks very clean inside, relieved about that. I also noticed I am pretty low on coolant, maybe real low, I remember once the message came on and I added some but it still appears to be low. I will flush and top off the system and see if that makes a difference. I haven't noticed the spin up starts but that may just be me...
looks good!
yeah vally pan gasket is a B* to repair because you have to pull the intake off.....

Thanks guys, I will do the flush and monitor routine over the holiday as I am heading down to Flagler Beach, Florida from Charlotte. About a 7 hour trip. I like to drive 70 and closely watch the mileage, last time I had 30.1mpg on the way down and 29.6 on the return with slightly overinflated tires. Of course I will have more weight this time. I bought a (2) Gibson Robot Guitar (Sn#3404 & 2507) and 15W Vox Amp recently and that stuff is heavy!
