Hey guys, right now I drive a Z28 with around 275hp. I want a Bmw bad,so I started to see what sort of engine options they are and I found out that the 540i has a 4.4L. What kind of horses does that equate to(stock)and what mods could be done to get the hp up to say around 275-300.Thanks
after 2000 the 540's had 290hp, y2k and before they had 282. there's not many mods for 540's, except for supercharging, that i'm aware of; however, stock 540 6speeds are beasts right out of the box

Wow. That's some pretty good numbers. I am looking at a 97 or 98 540i. I wasn't aware that they were that good stock. Thanks for the info.

It's also easy to add another 10hp, to push it up to 300. Simply add a Cold Air Intake (CAI). You can search this forum for more discussion. But here's some information for a product from Bavarian Autosports (http://www.bavauto.com/)
Quote:
If you want more power out of your BMW, you need to let more air in! To keep engine noise at an “acceptable” level, BMW encases the stock air filter in a plastic housing – a housing which restricts airflow into the engine. Installing a Bavarian Autosport Power Flow kit eliminates that housing, allowing more air to enter the engine so it can breathe as deeply as it wants. You get stepped-up performance you can both feel and hear. Installation for most kits is a simple, bolt-on procedure. Kits include reusable cone air filter, filter mount, bracket, instructions and hardware (where applicable). This kit increases power by 10 hp and torque by 14 ftlbs
