I am getting ready to purchase a 1998 540i with 27k miles. The price is 23,500 and I believe that is a pretty good deal based on the mileage. I know the person who purchased it new, so I know the mileage is correct.
The one issue that concerns me is that a few years ago someone mentioned something about certain V8 engines having a problem where they are only good for 70 to 80k miles. I wish I could remember more, but did nto think I would ever be buying my own so I did not pay much attention.
No, you're fine purchasing this car and it sounds like a good deal.
I think what you're thinking about is the NIKASIL issue with the V-8 blocks. It only affected 92 thru 95... Go to Yahoo and type NIKASIL on your browser... There is some good info regarding this issue.
It won 34 awards in the UK alone - for the 7 years it was available it won "what car" best executive saloon award 7 times, in fact they created a new award just for the e39 - " The life time achievement award".
If the miles are genuine you're buying a car that has barely been run in yet!
Also as far as I can find out there were no real problems with the big V's unfortunately though I have found there was a problem with the 97-98 2.5l straight 6 engines in which they strip the chrome off of the cylinders - Damn
