540 wagon, need help

hi, new to the forum. i acutally have benz e class. but looking into the 540 wagon.
can someone please tell me difference from 1999 to 2003 model in terms of exterior and interior changes.
also any problems that i should look for in particular years. for exampel regarding the benz e class, in 96-99 models., big problem with head gasket.

The only Exterior changes were made in 2000 and consist of Angel eyes, Slightly wider Kidney grilles and M5 style celis rear lights with clear repeaters. Interior as far as I am aware hasn't changed at all (although the US spec is probably different to ours anyway). As for problems they'd been making the car for 4 yrs by 1999 and had pretty much sorted out any probs by then (don't think there were many anyway).

Just take each car as an individual and check it out thoroughly before buying.

Actually in 2001 the changes consist of angel eye head lights,a more pronounced kidney grill,clear taillight reverse lamps and new foglights.For 2002 and on,the engine gets boosted 8 more hp(does not affect performance though)and a new sport package with an m5 body kit,m5 wheels,a sport steering wheel,better shocks and suspension and 10 way power sport seats.I own a 2000 540 wagon and it is a great car.

They may have been 2001 in the US but it was definetly 2000 in the Uk - the year they did away with the 523 and relaunched the 525 (192 hp 2.5l) and also increased the 520's (2.2l) hp to 170 - both were launched with this new facelift.

As I said Angel eyes (your - angel eye headlamps), Slightly Wider Kidney Grilles (your - more pronounced kidney grilles) & M5 style celis rear lights (your - clear taillight reverse lamps and new foglights).

The body kit and suspension upgrades were not standard accross the range - just an optional extra.

i really like the look of i guess now its the 2002 on with the body kit .........i am trying to see whether i should wait for the new 545 wagon to come out and see in person....the 545 i know is bigger inside than the 540, just not too thrilled iwth the 545 sharp dash up front inside..
any mechanical chronic problems with the 540 wagon though?
