540 I tune up

Im very mechanically inclined and would like to give the 98 540 i a tune up.

I have never tore into any of it but an oil change, so does it have plug wires and a cap under all that plastic or just plugs and wires?

It needs a tune up bad. I have a new fuel filter and changed the oil already.

It runs good after it warms up but misses a little at the first start up. Eventually it needs the typical suspension and bushing fixes. Is Ebay a good place for all the suspension goodies? Just wondering if those products on there are good the repairs I may need.

Thanks in advance ~Joe

Welcome to Bimmerwerkz.

It uses a coil pack system instead of a traditional distributor cap. The coil packs only ever need to be replaced then they fail. Their not a normal maintenance item. Spark plugs should definitley be replaced, and depending on your milage your Valve Cover Gasket (VGC) will definitely need to be replaced as well. The rubber gets hard and brittle over time and they leak oil. Fuel filter as well.

Contrary to popular belief, the transmission fluid is NOT lifetime fill. You should change the fluid every 50-80,000 miles. As well as the diff fluid.

I would avoid ebay personally. Their are tons of awesome retailers in the US that can help:

- Pelican Parts
- ECS Tuning
- Bavarian Auto
- Turner Motorsports

Pelican will pretty much have every OEM part you will need and you can search by part number on their website to find the exact part you need. Comes in handy. ECS does both OEM and aftermarket parts and has lots up excellent upgrades.
