I know a lot of people prefer the 530i because it has an I6 instead of a V8, but some would much rather have the V8...it is very much a matter of choice. I would say if you are not hating the power of the 530i and you feel you shouldn't have any major problems then stick with it, if you think the power sucks in the 530i and want a V8, or if you think it will give you less problems in the future then go with the 540i. I will say a 540i/6 would be much more fun to drive.
I have also an offer for M5 interior, Steering wheel & side mirrors @ 1500$ in a good condition. My plan is to upgrade the 540 with the m5 pack & to sell the 530 after I am satisfied with the 540 project
I am suspecting to pay 12000 total to upgrade the 540i
If the 540i is in good shape, has a detailed service history, and you feel like the 530i will have more problems because of the kilometers it has on it then I see no reason not too, but I would make sure to have the 540i checked out very well to make sure there isn't anything that will sneak up on you after you buy it and cause problems. Best of luck!
go with the 540....... mines done 205K with no great problems, and it eats up long journeys like Al Ain to Taif (2000 km in 14 hrs driving)...... .....as for common problems|: radiators blow because of the plastic header .... cam cover seals leak, idle control valves fail, some say that the oil pump bolts can work loose.... but the engines themselves are pretty solid.
