I have just purchased a 1997 535i (euro V8) and I have some sort of intermittent misfire. The car starts fine and engine sounds sweet when throttle is blipped. Cruising around the high street is also fine with no noticeable issues. However as soon as I make some use of the available power from my newfound gas-guzzler, the car begins to lose power, the revs go up but performance is defiantly reduced. Then when I come to a stop I can feel that the engine is missing and no longer smooth. This problem only disappears after the engine is shut down and re-started. I have changed the spark plugs and all appeared to show minimal signs of fouling.
No ECL appears on dash but saying that I have never seen the light on so bulb could have been removed by previous owner to hide fault (should I be able to see the ECL for a short time when ignition is turned on?).
My list of possible faults so far is:
Bad Ignition Coil
Fuel Filter
Manifold Gasket
Bad O2 sensor
Dirty Injector
Mass Air Flow Sensor
Any advice would be appreciated before I get it to a workshop for diagnostics.
hmm.... change the fuel filter if you dont know when the last time it was changed... could be your isse... you start demanding alot more fuel maybe it cant get threw so th engine leans out...

This is what I was hopeing but starting with low cost fix first sounds good to me anyway. Will give it a try.
fuel filtersare cheap.... and usually getting pretty clogged... also clean your MAF meter it can give you a couple of MPG and HP's back if it is drity
