I'm new to this forum. I recently purchased a used 1990 535i e34 BMW.
I wanted to replace the engine(because it has a piston slap noise).
Whats the best way to remove that engine. I heard from other threads that its harder to remove the engine by itself, rather than remove both tranny and engine at the same time.
Any thoughts out there....
Remove all the wiring connectors and assecories. Unbolt the driveshaft from transmission. Once all unneeded components have been disconnected or removed loosen the transmission mount bolts. Removing the transmission while attached to the engine is usually easier, providing you have an engine hoist.

will a 1 ton cherry picker work? do you know the weight of the automatic Transmission? and also the engine weight?
also, if I did remove the engine, what difficulties will I encounter?
The transmission is around 2-250lbs I believe. Full engine is around 400lbs? A 1 ton should be sufficient. Disconnecting the trans issuin while it is still in the vehicle is quite a fair bit more difficult then when it's out. Theirs a couple bolts at the top of the bell housing that are really hard to get too. I do recommend picking up a Bentley Service Manual or Haynes manual (both available for PDF download from this site) as it will help you greatly in showing you what you need to remove or disconnect.
