528 E39 - Occasional White Smoke

I have got a '98 528 which has got just over 100 thousand miles on the clock. When cold I have been getting a little bit of white smoke when starting, that has been happening for quite a while - other than that it has been running fine.

Occasionally (about once every couple of hundred miles) I am getting white smoke when I am driving - which lasts for a minute or so and then stops, sometimes you hear a quiet rattle from the engine just before it starts. If I hear the rattle and lift off the gas it isn't too bad - otherwise I get a complete smokescreen.

Any suggestions much appreciated....

Gaz..

I have never had to add any between services. Level is always at the top .. .. .. these days I don't do high mileage so it just gets changed on it's annual service.
