520D 58 Reg - Please advise on Oil Capacity??

Hi There,

I am new to this forum....and this question has probably been asked a million times but please help me

Please can you advise on the following....

I have a 58 Reg - 520D Manual

I have established that I require Castrol Fully Synthetic Oil 0W-30 grade.

Please can you advise....

1. How much oil should I purchase? will 4 Litres do?
2. What is the part number for the OEM Oil Filter? or what oil filter do you recommend?
3. Is it a cartridge oil filter as in the iner filter it's self or a normal metal oil filter with the casing that you just screw on??

As you can see I am not the bes mecanic, but I would rather do my oil change myself rarther than being raped by BMW for £185

What year is your car? It is different between E39 and E60.

Where are you located? In the EU their is a ruling that they can void your warranty for failing to use OEM parts.

The part number for the OEM filter is: 11.42.7.807.177 and they come with a new rubber o ring plus sump plug washer. Mann is the OEM supplier for the BMW filters.

The oil filter is a cartidge style filter that is accesible from the top of the engine bay. The filter sits in a plastic housing so be careful not to overtighen it or you will crack it.

Hi there, thank you for your response, my car is an E60

Please can you advise on the capacity of the oil? Will 4 litres be enough?

I am based in the uk and the cars now 4 years old so the warranty has expired.

It should specify in your owners manual. I believe the 520 takes 5L.

Best bet is to buy at least 5L, then add and top up as nessecary. My 2.8L takes 6.5L of oil.
