Hi,
I have a 1990 520i Se and have have lost the key for it.
Does anybody know if there is a key number anywhere on the vehicle so I can have a new one cut without having to strip the locks out.

Wouldn't that make it rather easy for auto theives to acquire keys for your car???

"Think I'll steal that BMW over there - just take a peak behind the left rear wheel and get the key number!"

Seriously, a BMW dealer should be able to help you here - might be expensive though.

Check whether you have written the VIN on things like insurance policy, service records, registration records...etc. Take the VIN to any BMW dealer should get you another key.

The 1st thing I got my E39 I went to the BMW dealer next day to get another key for spare. I think anyone who has only one key should do this.

True. Take your VIN number, proof of insurance and a valid ID and they'll cut it for you. It should take a day or two. Here in USA, it cost me 23 dollars to get one made. Not too bad.
