Which 5 Series to buy??? - BMW Forum

I am in the market for mid-size sports sedan. Looking at A6, and 5 series. I know you guys are BMW fans, would recommend that (I am a BMW fan myself), but wanted to get some feedback on if it is truly a better/reliable ride than the A6. Also, I was looking for a 550, 530, , 545, 535 and I wonder what to get in case??

What are the feeling from people that have those. Heard some horror stories about 535 engine issues, what about the other options? Trying to stay away from V8, but if its the best option in the batch, will consider it.

I tested the new 5 but out of my price at this point. Looking at 2007 or newer cert. pre-owned ones.

I'm surprized you didn't get any responses here. I've never heard of any engine issues with
a 535 but hey, what do I know?

I've got a 2002 540 and it runs perfectly. The engine is almost very smooth and has
gobs of torque everywhere.

To the OP: Do you have any preference for rear wheel drive over front driven cars?

I absolutely prefer rear wheel drive.

Welcome to the Werkz. I can't offer much input on the topic of engine issues, although if there are issues, I'd expect that there would be plenty of bad press about them. I think that the only model with a straight six is the 530i, evertything else is a V8

Kinda just the other way around, only the 540 has a v8, all others have straight 6's. Later the 540 became the 545 and then 550. But those were the only v8's in their respective years. All other models such as, 528, 530, 535, etc were straight 6's.

Put another way, only one model each year was a v8, all the others were 6's. (Ok, the T is a v8)
