2005 BMW 545i Service Engine light - BMW Forum

My 05 545i car has the service engine light on but when reviewing the details the only warning is the brake fluid indicator which the service tech at the dealer topped off. Not sure if anyone out there also has identified the reason for the service engine soon indicator as I just got the car and it drives fine. Thanks in advance........

It could be as simple as a gas cap not quite tight enough.

I tried reinstalling it but it does not jhelp. Now the emmissions warnings come on intermittently and the car failed state inspection.

The engine service soon light also came on my 06 525 a few weeks ago. I couldnt figure out what was wrong with it from my owners manual either. Someone suggested that maybe I got some bad gas or that my gas cap was not on properly. So I retighted my gas cap and went to a name brand gas station. The light just went away after a few days of driving the car. I dont know if it was actually the gas cap not on properly or tightly (which seemed to be on properly to me) or the bad gas or a combination of both. Either way the problem went away. Good luck.
