2003 540i Reliability

I've read in different places that the E39 is not reliable, in that it has a lot of problems. These problems were not spelled out, but costly repairs have been mentioned. Just trying to confirm or debunk that viewpoint. Reliability comes down to how many times will it have to be in the shop and for how much over a...say...5 year period..on average of coarse because it really depends on the car.

Just looking for advice from 03-04 540i owners I guess, really. Thanks alot for helping me in my search for the right BMW!!!

Very hard to say, its like buying a computer.
If you are looking 03-04 540i most likely are bug free. Long as the car is under waranty you should be fine. (Go to dealship to buy your new car)
