My bother inlaw has a leased 530i and I was think of paying it out when the lease ends in 2006. But everyone keeps telling me that the car is ok but after about 2 years the car goes to shit and it starts to give all kinds of problems . I think that this is all bull but just wanted to make sure. I really want the car and I would not mind spending the money for it.
I have a few friends who own the 1988-1995 E34 5 series and they constantly have problems with them. But I also have one friend who has a '99 E39 530i with almost 150K on the odometer and has had ZERO problems with the car. Hope it helps. My information isn't very scientific but it seem like the e39 cars are far superior to and more reliable than the older e34 cars.

I leased a 2001 530i for three and a half years before purchasing an E60. With the exception of burnt-out turn signal bulbs (one replaced under warranty and one purchased for $2.00) and a loose steering fluid hose that was quickly tightened after grinding noises were heard from the steering column, nothing else went wrong. Be careful with the fragile cup holders, however, and clean them quickly if something sticky spills.
