2002 e39 sound from engine - BMW Forum

New to site and thanks to all. I have a 2002 e39 when the engine is normal temps i get like a whistle sound at engine compartment. Can't point it out i have 63,000 miles on her. Sometimes when idle park the sound goes away then hit the gas and it starts.

Your intake piping might not be sealed tightly to your throttle body.

Your intake piping might also have developed a small hole.

Your air filter box might be slightly open.

Your mechanical radiator fan clutch might be on the way out.

Can anybody else think of any other possibilities?

It sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine if you are facing the engine.

Well, that is where the throttle body is...

Its a 2002 540i 4.4 v8. Maybe its the idle pulley something like that.

Maybe the accessory belt slips a bit?

alternator, maybe?... I wonder if yours has the alternator that has the air horn attached to it for cooling. a partially clogged airway will produce a whistle-like noise.

Yea I know exactly what you are talking about--it is very annoying and I am a complete audiophile, so I took it to the stealership, and of course they said the usual "we didn't hear that sound"/"the car functions as a normal 5-series would" BULLSH**!
