2002 530i E39, Vibration During Acceleration in Lower Gears?
My 530i has developed a heavy vibration while accelerating in the lower gears. It only seems to happen after the car has been driven a couple of miles and/or the engine has warmed up. It does not lose power and no noticable loss in mileage. It cruzes nice and smooth in 4th or 5th gear with no vibration or other symptoms. Idle is nice and smooth also, staying constant at ~750 RPM after warming up.
During the past 3 months the check engine light has come on twice, but did not remain on. The first time it had an OBD code of P1347 - Misfire Cylinder 3, and the second time the code was P1349 - Misfire Cylinder 4. Both occured after very cold weather. After resetting the codes they did not occur again. No other codes are being stored.
I also have a clicking noise, sometime, when coming to a stop and no load on the engine. It kind of sounds like a fan blade hitting the fan cage, but I am sure that it is not the fan making the noise.
Because the engine is not losing power, accelerates OK other than the vibration, cruzes OK, and idles OK without any stutter in the tachometer, I do not suspect the engine. The clicking noise might be something in the drive shaft (?).
I had a similar problem recently where my car starting shaking and engine light came on. I use to hear a Tik Tik sound also for some days just like as if fan is touching the sides just like you mentioned. The sound increased after a few days when the incident happened. I went to the mechanic and it was diagnosed of having one spark plug broken. After replacement all became normal. Just have a look at the spark plus. May be one or multiple are damaged causing this problem.
I pulled the plugs today and do not see any damage to any plug. All look normal with no cracks in the ceramic and all with a nice grey-brown color on the tips. These plugs are Bosch Platinum 4+ with less than 20K miles.
I did notice something strange ( to me). The plug caps on cylinders 2 and 4 are different than the ones on 1,3,5,6. Cylinders 2 & 4 have BMW parts, # 1 748 018 BREMI and the rest are Bosch parts, # 0 221 504 004. Is this normal?
