I have a 2000 BMW 540i 6-speed and noticed an oil leak from the hose connected to the resivoir that reads ATF Fluid only (Drivers side wheel well). My questestion is what is this for since the vehicle is a 6-speed not an automatic. I need to add fluid, because of the leak. ANy recomendations as to what ATF fluid to use? I would appreciate any insight into this matter. Thanks.

It sounds to me likes its your power steering fluid check your owns manual for the proper type
As bgwoody said it is your power steering fluid but When the cap on the reservior says/reads ATF it means just that; ATF (automatic transmission fluid) and that is what you add to the power steering fluid. Dexron/mercon will do NOT another power steering fluid like DOT stuff.
the oil leak from the under hose is very common, if the hose is so bad cut a small piece out of the deteriorated tip of the hose, if not just reattach to buttom by using a good quality clamp to tighten), don't over tighten-- you may break the plastic!!!!!
good luck
