1998 540i E39 wild problems help

the other day my wife was driving car and all of a sudden the car started missind and stalling at idle. Iwent and got car and hooked up scanner and it said i had missfires in all cylinders, among other codes 170 173 400 and so on. 16 codes alltogether. she also said the car was running so rough and had white smoke from exuast, witch cleared up in couple of mins. I started the car and missed badly but cleared up until i drove it and was missing so badly i could not shift tout of 3d. stopped and let car sit for 20-30mins got in and ran perfect. IM really stumped. havent pulled plugs yet but will tomorrow. Any ideas as to what could be the problem. Oh and hi vader

Hey Mike,

The P03xx codes are all misfire codes. Why you have all of them going off is a concern. The missfire could be causing the O2 sensor codes because the missfires would cause a the DME to go full rich, this will cause the sensor to read wrong. The misfires could be caused by a faulty cam or crankshaft sensor.

P0153 - Oxygen Sensor Circuit Slow Response (Bank2, Sensor1) This code indicates the engine air fuel ratio is not being adjusted by the oxygen sensor signal or the ECM as expected to do so, or not adjusted as often as expected to do so once the engine is warmed or under normal engine use. Usually caused by the sensor failing or the wiring is damaged.

-P0100 Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Malfunction - Meaning something is wrong with your MAF. Clean with CRC Maf cleaner and re install.
-P0170 (Fuel Trim-Bank 1) - Fuel is Lean
-P0173 (Fuel Trim-Bank 2)
- P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow

540i

Thanks vader. The car ran like brand new for two days and once it started raining and driving all day in the rain it started running badly once again. Oh and 1 other thing is this morning I started the car and all my digitial numbers and letters in the dash were perfect whats weird is they havent been since i bought the car, and after driving the car for 1 hour the dash went back to its state like before real spotty numbers and letters. Im kinda stumped as to what and where it may have a short, and what kinda short would make the car run so badly?

Wild problems

Hi vader,

It seemed to, today i took it to a car wash and on the way home witch is a 2 hr drive home from work it started running like crap again when I was almost home and when i got home hooked up scanner and all the same codes again. so i removed all the fuses again and checked they were ok and i took an air hose and blew out the trunk fuse box reinstalled the fuses and it ran fine Know i have to locate the leak. I really dont know if that is the hole problem or not. I think there is another ground problem somewhere else but for know it seemed to work What really has me concerend is the fact that each time it has done this it throws the exact same 16 codes IM reall at a loss as to why and where to look. Will keep you updated on travel from home to oregon this week will let you know monday when we return. Thanks for your help really appericate it.
