I just picked up my father-in-laws 1997 e39 with 59,000 miles on it. I also have an '02 TL Type S. I'm considering upgrading the car via Angel Eyes, wheels and maybe a body kit, but I don't think I want to dump too much $ into it. I picked it up for $13,000...super clean. Do you think the mods are worth it?

Absolutely. The factory angel eyes will set you back about $800 but it is my favorite mod and the first thing I look at every time I approach the car. I don't know that I would spring for a full body kit but an air dam and maybe a rear apron is nice. And you'll never go wrong upgrading to 18" wheels. Since you bought it at a good price, it shouldn't hurt so bad to spend a little money on it.
besides, it's just money, you can't take it with you.

yeah, I think I'm going to throw on some big new wheels and maybe clear lenses all around. What were they thinking with 15 inch wheels...$4gs for a body kit is a little much for a six year old car. I have to tell you though, my Type S blows the 528's doors in, but the car is solid, quiet, and handles very well. It even looks new. I think I'll put $2 or 3K into it.

Any problems I should be aware of @ 59,000 miles? I have that musty smell in the A/C and the wheel shimmy @ 60 MPH, but not at any other speed.

I appreciate the input.

NEW DDE's from UMNITZA & Europersona for 97-2000 E39 5 Series with or without Xenon.

Since BMW developed their widely admired "Angel Eyes" on 2001+ 5 Series Cars, it left our Pre 2001 5er Owners spending upwards of $800 for a set of angel eyes.

Now thanks to research done by Umnitza and Europersona we can now offer you a Low-Cost, Brighter, and Sharper looking option for your 97-00 5 Series BMW.

DDE (Daylight Demon Eyes).

E39 DDE Lighting Plus
$200 Plus Shipping

E39 DDE Lighting Enhanced
$280 Plus Shipping

Both kits come with PnP & E39 Harness.

Hope this help!

Are the angel eyes a DIY or should a mod shop do it. I hear conflicting stories...wiring issues etc.

Plus I have a good lead on 18" BBS 2 pc wheels - used. $800 ($2500 new) Any way to check the integrety of the wheels? i.e, not bent. Is there any advantage of a 2 pc vs a 1 pc or 3 pc? My local BMW dealer recommended their "on site" mod shop....he has the wheels and is a liscenced Racing Dynamics/Electradyne dealer.

This will also depend if you are upgrading to xenon or staying with halogen lights. The UM NItza kit is an angel eye kit that you put into your existing lights.. The Hella kit that I have IS the factory replacement that they use in Europe (clear corners) or the US (Orange corners) and tends to run around $849.00. I got mine at Bavauto. I think Europersona (the board sponser) can get them although they aren't listed on their website.

I just got the halogen clear corner angel eyes from a guy on ebay, new, for 600 bucks. His ebay name is Pavrac. I highly reccomend him. the order was fast and simple plus all the parts needed were supplied with the order. The AE's are definately one of my favorite mods thus far....

I was taking my car to a shop tp paint the air dam and rear apron so I had them do the lights while it was there. It didn't look like it was difficult.
And like dave528 said, it is my favorite mod on the car.

Hey,
I bought those same Angel Eyes from Pavrac on Ebay. Outstanding product and smooth inexpensive (considering other choices) transaction. Total cost was about 600.00 I got the parts in about 3 days and installed them myself. They look good.
Note:
I also have a 97 (540i) Beware that when you install that set of Angel Eyes on a 97 you have to slightly bend the AC fill line to make them fit correctly. Bending the aluminum line is easy a few degrees to the right but please be careful, that thing can break easy!!!!! This set does not require modification of any sort on the lights like other products. It is a real "click & play" product!!!!
Good luck!!!

Also,
Bought some nice Celis "look alike" tail lights, Crystal Clear Red/White. They look just like Celis lights except they install like OEM. These lights replace your old tail lights without modifcation or extra wiring. They look good and cost about 150.00 less than Celis (200.00 is what I paid) with no drilling or special wiring required for installation. They come from Taiwan............. Another "click & play" product
My total headlight/taillight upgrade cost 800.00 with no modifications or headaches... True DIY stuff..... These two lights changes will bring your 97 up 2001+ standards and it will be hard to tell the cosmetic differences bewteen the two from outside appearance,
Good luck!!!
B)

I think I'm going to do the total light package and wheels for now. Thanks for the ebay info...I've been checking that out...

18's or 19s? Do the 19s rub?

Chrism, in regards to the BBS rims you were interested in.... if you like I can I have them X-rayed for flaws, checked for roundness and make sure they haven't been bent. For a small fee of course. I'm a consultant and have contacts in the Aerospace industry that performs these types of tasks all the time for the Air Force and airliners. They don't have us check wheels (of course) but rather parts of an engine after testing etc.
