1994 525i Trunk Lock Broken

Does anyone know how to open the trunk in a 1994 525i? I heard with the many of the 3 series cars there's a spot you can drill under the license plate that gives you access to the lever to open the trunk, but I can't find anything in the e34 series.

Basically my trunk lock will lock all the car doors, but will not unlock any of them (and will not open itself). I need to get in there to replace my taillight, and hopefully start being able to use it for storage again.

Are you able to open the trunk at all?

The lock on my trunk sticks sometimes. Use some graphite lube to help it. If you have a trunk lock actuator it may have died. Mine did and thus does not lock with the central locking.

Unfortunately the lock won't open no matter what I do. only thing it's good for anymore is locking the doors if I'm behind the car, and forgot to do so at the door itself (though unlocking does nothing).

I would try graphite lube first, and see if that works. If not, then you will have to drill the trunk just like the E36.

If you do drill the trunk, depending on where you live you will want to replace it. The hole will attract moisture and begin rusting allmost immediatley.

I'll try that. Do you know the place to dril? I heard one comment on it being the same general area as the e36,but haven't found anywhere that actually gives any details

I have never seen a write up on how to do it on any other car besides the E36. As far as I know its the exact same as your trying to get to the lock rod inside. The most common reason for the trunk not opening is the lock rod coming off the mechanism thus not making contact with the release latch.

If you need pictures of what it looks like let me know and I can show you on my E36. If it was me though, I would be replacing the trunk anyway, so you dont have to be super precise. As far as I know, if you have a VIN sticker behind your license plate that spot is where you need to drill. Most recommend a 25 mm hole saw bit.
