The other week I was adjusting my rear view mirror and it just fell off from the front windscreen...Obviously I was shocked because this kinda thing has never happened to me before. I'm guessing the previous owner of my car had issues with it because there's an awful mess where it looks like he's tried to attach the mirror (chips, unsightly marks). As such, I have no idea what it originally should look like.
So i tried fixing it back up with super glue and had absolutely no luck with that due to the weight of the mirror and the fact it's hanging upside down so it's almost impossible to bond it with enough force. Also, the surface where the mirror meets the glass is raised about 1mm so its quite annoying...its like putting a coin on top of a larger coin, so there's a ring around the outside (sorry i don't know how better to describe it).
Anyways, at the same time saw a replacement rear view mirror for sale on ebay...except its from the newer models (e39, e46, etc). It kinda looked the same and the price was good so I bought it. It has a red LED light and 10-pin plug thing.
My question is, how on earth do I go about attaching this thing? I've never understood why the BMW mirrors are attached hanging from the windscreen, whereas many other cars are bolted to the ceiling or something...
Can anyone offer a solution or will i have to resort to using epoxy to glue the mirror onto the glass? Is there a special part that I need to secure it...gluing it on seems quite fragile.
Also, I may want to buy a new windscreen while I'm at it...the current one has one or 2 stonechips.
Sorry about the really long post, hope someone can help. (yes I'm a total newbie, forgive me!)
pretty much any type of rear view mirror should fit, when you attached the mirror up , is the mirror one piece , or does it slide off a peg (metal or otherwise?) if it does slide off, find the proper adheasive that is for glass and metal(or whatever) put the peg back on and leave it to cure overnight or longer.. than you should be ok to to put the mirror back on....
i had this problem in my work truck a heavy duty domestic which is different but i believe the method is the same.
Take care. I read on another forum that others having the same problem couldn't fix the mirror back up just using super glue or similar. You need a special "glue" that reacts with the type of glass used by BMW.
