1990 520i Key problems
I have a 1990 European Spec 520i and when I tried to crank it last night the ignition switch turned to the "On" position (never went to "Start") and would not go any further. When I tried to turn the key the other direction it would not turn backward either and of course can not be taken out of the switch. The battery seems fine (although I am sure with the switch in the "on" position it is no doubt drained by now). In the process of trying everything I could think of (taking the car in and out gear, turning the steering wheel, which is unlocked, as far as it would go in both directions, cussing the car and the Bavarians who built it) I noticed that the break pedal did not seem to have any travel at all. I am thinking that maybe there is a switch in the brake pedal mechanism that must be made before the key can go to "start"? I do not have to have a foot on the break to start the car, or the clutch mashed in for that, it will start in gear or in neutral either way, or of course with break on and the clutch engaged. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas what my problem may be?
