You just said it was a 533i - so how in the world could it be a real m5? look at the registration - is it registered as "M5" or "533i" ??
easy, a true M's vin begins with WBS ( for 3 and 5 series. not 6 or other odd balls)
but an even easier method is me telling you its not because they didnt realease the M in the US till 09/86 and ended is 11/87

1982-1984 533i e28
1984-1987 535i e28
1986-1987 M5 was made.
You should be able to tell quickly by stepping on the throttle. The 533i was the 535i's "little sister". If that does not convince you then look under the radiator the 533i does not have an engine oil cooler.
