I bought my first Bimmer in 10 years. Drives great. Looks great. NAV is great. Doesn't BMW understand that scratchy sounding AM radio (it sounds like its not tuned right, but it is), RDS that doesn't work, & a radio that turns on by itself (on 3 seperate occasions so far) undermines the experience? They tell me that I can't get satellite radio. And after 2 times at the shop, what does the dealer say? (BTW, this is a major dealer in NY.)They (the service foreman that is) say the radio sounds like an AM radio should (its not FM they tell me). I tell them I have owned a lot of cars and been listening to radio, AM & FM, for over 45 years and it DOESN'T have to sound that way. When I spoke to the guy who sold me the car about the AM issues, he tells me that nobody ever complained about that before--he says I guess his customers don't listen to AM ( I told him they must not listen to sports, traffic or news.)They write on the service report: radio turning on by itself is NORMAL operation of BMW software. They tell me to forget the RDS. I am bummed.

Found this on another forum, it's a BMW Technical bulliten about the radio switching itself on and a recommended fix. Bring it to your dealer's attention, the notice says fix only if customer complains.

Thanks. I checked the service order where they told me that this was normal operation of some cars due to BMW software to see if they did this work (apparently they didn't do this work even though I did "complain"--they did some other grounding work having to do with one of the tail lights pursuant to another bulletin). The radio turning on by itself problem hasn't happened since I last brought it in so it had me wondering. I will alert them to this bulletin when I bring the car in again.
