well here's what I would do. Replace the Primary Timing chain tensioner and the Vanos solenoid. (those are their names when you look up the replacement parts)

While it's highly unlikely that the VANOS solenoid could go bad regardless of usage, the tensioner can It's a spring, it's working hard whether or not the timing chain is moving, which means even when the motor isn't running, it's still wearing.
