JUst to clarify to everyone else: what you are replacing is the plastic cover on the b-pillar.

Now, regarding the VAnos noise: have you kept up with the regular maintenance? Oil changes, filters, etc.? Whe I bought my car, the salesman told me that most of the time, the vanos would get noisy when something simple like that was long overdue. SOrry I can't be of more help. I will do a little research. Do you have the Bentley manual?
